Spend your summer at Essex Art Center!

Our summer programs for teens are a series of two-week opportunities that allow young people to get involved in the community, collaborate with professional artists and other teens, and develop professional and creative skills. Our summer programs

  • Creating on the Canal

    Creating on the Canal

Creating on the Canal is an intensive summer program geared toward teens in 9th - 12th grades that explores temporary and site-specific public art through the creation of a series of murals on Island Street in Lawrence. Participating students will work with teaching artist Amanda Beard García to explore our Island Street neighborhood and create work that considers the power of place. You'll participate in the research, design, and creation stages of the murals, working closely with Amanda and other teens to closely consider the role of images in transforming urban spaces. You will also receive a stipend for participating.

The program is open to young people living in Lawrence or the surrounding area. Program dates are July 15 - July 26, 10:00am - 4:00pm. You can apply BELOW. Priority deadline is Sunday, June 2.

  • Stories in our Streets

Stories in our Streets is an intensive summer program for teens in 9th - 12th grades that explores how art and writing interact and strengthen one another in the public space. This summer, participants will redefine public art as something that can circulate in your hands or pockets, through print. Your work will result in a publication set to be widely distributed in public places throughout Lawrence.

We are proud to partner with Andover Breadloaf, a writing and social justice organization affiliated with Phillips Academy, to host the program. Taught by Lawrence-based artist jayvie song, Stories in our Streets will provide you with an opportunity to hone your skills in both visual art and creative writing, and explore the urban landscape in Lawrence through field trips, visiting artists, and a variety of creative prompts. You don't have to be an expert writer or artist to apply. Students will also receive a stipend.

Program dates are August 5 - August 19, 10:00am - 3:00pm. You can apply BELOW. Priority deadline is Sunday, June 30.
