Summer Public Art Intensive
About
Essex Art Center's Public Art Intensive is a community-based art revitalization program that actively involves young people in creating city-scaled works of art. Through a series of activities—including the design and creation of public artworks—the program integrates paid community service with relevant curriculum and professional development.
What does our program do?
The program introduces public art as a means to stimulate dialogue and facilitate positive change in communities. Students learn about the social impact of public art, the crucial role that artists play in society, and possible careers in the arts. Under the guidance of an artist instructor, they learn the multiple stages required to complete large public art projects, including building relationships with community stakeholders, developing proposals, designing prototypes, installing a finished work of art and planning for its maintenance.
The 2022 Public Art Intensive was made possible through the support of Mass Cultural Council...Stay tuned for applications for the 2023 Summer Program.
