In 2020, all three of the artist's children returned home. The next eighteen months were filled with conversations and debates that inspired this work and brought her back to writing poetry. The sculptures in this exhibition informed the creation of the poems and vice versa. Some reflect her personal experiences and relationships, while others contemplate our shared history. The music presented is a combination of songs produced by her son, Mouhammed.
Remembered explores how we all struggle and thrive in different ways due to the environment in which we find ourselves. Influences from Thiam's time living in Senegal, Spain, and the Caribbean are also present. West African textiles and architecture the work of Gaudí, as well as interpretations of natural structures and reflections on her own spiritual journey, come to life in her sculptural forms and honor the legacy of traumas and triumphs. In each piece, strength and vulnerability are revealed together.
